New places, new things and find a pub

What’s your favorite part about visiting a new place — the food? The architecture? The people watching?

When we travel we always try new things. It could be zip lining through a jungle, hiking to a secluded waterfall, or taking a swamp boat through the Everglades. Yeah little beady black eyes floating in the water was a little too close for comfort, but whatever it might be we try to experience the surrounding area and get a feel for what it has to offer. If you don’t experience where you are, then why did you go in the first place? Even going to a city that you already know you can experience something new, you just need to look for it.

We’ve gone down lonely highways, side roads and taken turns that we weren’t sure where it might take us, but it is all part of visiting a new place. When we lived in Hawaii we would often go off and explore the island that we lived on. How often do you get to live in Hawaii and hear about a trail that will lead to a beautiful waterfall at the end, or a drive that ends with only a dirt road to take you further? You don’t often get those experiences but when you do, take them. It made our experience even more worthwhile than some people we know.

That leads me to another favorite when we are out and about- food and drink. If you are somewhere new, try the food, the drink, and always find a nearby pub. We have had some of the most laid back, relaxing times in pubs across the country. Beers have been phenomenal and we have always found a pub with several brews on tap. Food has been edible and worthy of being eaten, and atmospheres haven’t disappointed. I think that is what has made them so relaxing for us. Everything and everyone has just melded together. Kind of like the bar scenes from the old television show “Cheers”. You felt like everyone knew your name when you walked into a room. Those are the kind of pubs we’ve found out there.

On our most recent excursion we found places in Arizona that had great food, extensive beer lists, were family and dog friendly, and packed. I kid you not if you find places like this they are keepers for the next time around.

So enjoy, explore, relax, and take it all in. It is the only way to visit a new place.
